The official military requirements guide (MFGRT008-01, 2008) for wound classification identifies four grades of limb swelling and impairment in casualties, but not for the casualty's feet, which has a different rating. To validate these guidelines, random samples of the MFGRT008-01 guidelines were compared to records from a similar field survey where pairs of trained observers and recorders graded useable and unusable foot wounds in casualties from the same incident. The grade of swelling and impairment in the casualty's feet was determined only when that part of the casualty was clinically unaffected. From all 68 casualty records in the survey and on-scene observation, 98.5 per cent of the wounds were deemed too swollen for use. But I also think that one of the points is that we can't ignore the fact that we're always in a social situation. So I think that I came to a lot of what's in the book through my social work. And through writing, and just by talking to a lot of people and thinking a lot and observing a lot. CORNISH: And
